										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>So, your agency has landed that shiny new client. The script’s ready, visuals are looking sharp, and then comes the inevitable question: <strong><em>“How much is the voiceover going to cost?”</em></strong></p>
<p>If only there were a neat, one-size-fits-all answer. The truth is, UK <a href="https://clairewyatt.com/studio-rates/">voiceover rates</a> vary depending on a whole range of factors: project type, usage, duration, and—crucially—the experience of the voice you hire.</p>
<p>This blog will give you a clear sense of what to budget for different kinds of projects, plus a reality check on why the cheapest option isn’t always the smartest investment.</p>
<h2>The two parts behind every quote: session and usage</h2>
<p>Professional voiceover quotes usually break down into two main elements:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Basic studio/session fee</strong> (BSF) – the cost of recording, editing, and delivering the files. (My BSF is £300 by the way.)</li>
<li><strong>Usage/licence fee</strong> – the cost of using the recording, which depends on where and how it will be heard (internal only vs. national TV ad, for example) and for how long. Because having a voice heard across TV or social is more “valuable” than internal training, and that needs proper compensation.</li>
</ol>
<p>So when a client asks you “How much will the voiceover be?”, remember that size isn&#8217;t everything! The script may be short, but the price is really driven by <em><strong>how</strong> </em>the audio will be used. And there are so many different types of voiceover job &#8211; and this is where it can get complicated.</p>
<h2>What drives the cost of a voiceover? (Or, why your “cheap voiceover” sometimes comes back to bite)</h2>
<p>Here are the biggest factors that influence the price:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Length</strong> and word count: A two-minute internal explainer is cheaper than a 10-hour audiobook. But a 60 second TV ad can be as much as a decent new car!</li>
<li><strong>Usage</strong> and reach: Internal training? Modest fee. National TV ad? You’ll need broadcast licensing. There&#8217;s a simple algorithm based on TVRs.</li>
<li><strong>Complexity</strong> and style: Technical scripts, medical narration, multiple characters, or niche accents need more prep.</li>
<li><strong>Turnaround</strong> speed: Rush jobs usually come with rush rates.</li>
<li><strong>Revisions</strong> and retakes: A pro like me will include fair revisions, but extensive rewrites aren’t free.</li>
<li><strong>Studio</strong> vs home setup: If I use my <a href="https://clairewyatt.com/studio-rates/">own professional home studio</a> (as I do) it lowers overheads for you vs booking big studios.</li>
<li><strong>Experience</strong> and quality: You’re paying not just for a voice, but for reliability, consistency, experience and the ability to nail the read first time. Trust me, it <a href="https://clairewyatt.com/2018/09/11/5-reasons-to-spend-more-on-voiceover/">adds real value.</a></li>
</ul>
<p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-2161 size-large" src="https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Infographic-Presentation-1024x576.png" alt="usage-voiceover-costs-uk-price" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Infographic-Presentation-980x551.png 980w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Infographic-Presentation-480x270.png 480w" sizes="(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw" /></p>
<h2>Sample UK voiceover rates (ballpark figures you can whisper to your clients!)</h2>
<p>Here’s a rough idea of what different types of projects might cost in the UK market. These aren’t rigid rules, but they give you solid benchmarks for client discussions:</p>
<table>
<thead>
<tr>
<td><strong>Project type</strong></td>
<td><strong>Typical pricing model</strong></td>
<td><strong>Approx range / notes</strong></td>
</tr>
</thead>
<tbody>
<tr>
<td>Corporate / internal video narration</td>
<td>Session fee</td>
<td>BSF from £300</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Online / explainer / web video</td>
<td>Session + usage uplift</td>
<td>BSF plus usage starting around £150+</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>E-learning / training modules</td>
<td>Per word or per finished minute</td>
<td>The longer the script, the lower the per word rate &#8211; £0.19 &#8211; £0.60 per word</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>IVR / phone prompts / on-hold</td>
<td>Session fee + prompt rate</td>
<td>From £50 minimum</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Radio / TV commercials (broadcast)</td>
<td>Session + usage/licence</td>
<td>From £300 session + usage (varies by station/reach)</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Audiobooks / narration</td>
<td>Per finished hour (PFH)</td>
<td>£85–£300 PFH depending on scope</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
<p>These ranges cover the “average” professional. Experienced, in-demand voices may charge more, and rightly so (more on that in a minute).</p>
<h2>Price vs value: why the cheapest voice can be the most expensive mistake</h2>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignleft wp-image-2165 size-medium" src="https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/hire-Claire-300x225.png" alt="price-value-VO-voice-over" width="300" height="225" />Here’s where things get interesting. Clients often fixate on cost, but for agencies and most clients, what really matters is <strong>value</strong>. You’re not just buying a few minutes of recorded audio—you’re buying everything that comes with it.</p>
<p>Think about it this way:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Experience saves you money</strong>: A pro can <a href="https://clairewyatt.com/2021/06/17/voice-over-iq-and-eq/">deliver the right tone</a> in fewer takes, meaning less editing, fewer revisions, and faster project turnaround. Time saved = money saved.</li>
<li><strong>Cheap voices cost more in the long run</strong>: If the recording isn’t up to scratch, you may need to re-record with someone else, explain delays to your client, or worse—deliver subpar work. That “bargain” £50 read suddenly looks very expensive.</li>
<li><strong>Professionalism matters</strong>: Deadlines, consistent quality, file formats, availability. An amateur might leave you hanging; a pro voiceover artist won’t.</li>
<li><strong>Your client notices</strong>: A polished voiceover elevates the entire production. A ropey one can undermine all the great design and strategy work you’ve put in.</li>
<li><strong>Creative polish:</strong> The difference between “reads the words” and<a href="https://clairewyatt.com/2018/11/12/e-learning-is-all-about-engagement/"> “makes your message land.”</a></li>
<li><strong>Peace of mind has value</strong>: Knowing the job will be done right the first time means you can focus on everything else your client needs.</li>
</ul>
<p>So yes, you could get a cheaper voice from, say, a freelancer in a less saturated market. But there’s a reason some voices cost more—and why <a href="https://clairewyatt.com/clients/">creative agencies and clients</a> often prefer me:</p>
<h2>FAQs agencies ask about voiceover pricing</h2>
<p><strong>Why do voiceovers cost so much for ads?<br />
</strong>Because the reach (TV, radio, online campaigns) massively increases the value of the voice. A national ad that airs for months is very different to a one-off internal training video.</p>
<p><strong>Isn’t there always someone who’ll do it cheaper?</strong><br />
Yes, but if they can’t deliver broadcast-quality audio on deadline—or if their performance falls flat—you’ll end up paying more to fix it. Plus, a pro knows how to approach the script with minimal direction and adds ideas and experience to the mix. My clients often come in with one idea, I offer my take &#8211; and that&#8217;s the one they use!</p>
<p><strong>Can’t AI just do it now?</strong><br />
Synthetic voices exist, but they can’t capture nuance, humour, or subtle persuasion the way a real human can. If your client cares about brand identity (and they should), a professional voice is non-negotiable.</p>
<h2><strong>Tips for getting better value from your voiceover budget</strong></h2>
<ol>
<li><strong>Be specific in the brief</strong> – usage, audience, tone, file format. Clear briefs save money.</li>
<li><strong>Bundle jobs</strong> – recording multiple scripts in one session keeps costs down.</li>
<li><strong>Plan ahead</strong> – avoid rush fees by scheduling voiceovers early in the project timeline.</li>
<li><strong>Ask for usage clarity</strong> – always confirm media, territory, and duration up front.</li>
<li><strong>Work with the same voice over time</strong> – long-term collaboration builds efficiency (and trust).</li>
</ol>
<h2><strong>The bottom line: what’s a voiceover really worth?</strong></h2>
<p>So, how much does a voiceover cost? In the UK, a simple narration couple start around £200. A broadcast commercial could run into four figures with usage fees. An audiobook may be hundreds per finished hour.</p>
<p>But the real question isn’t <em>“How much does it cost?”</em> It’s <em>“What’s the value of getting it right first time?”</em></p>
<p>A pro voiceover doesn’t just tick a budget line. It makes your client’s content sound credible, trustworthy, engaging—and by extension, it makes your agency look brilliant.</p>
<h2><strong>Why hire me?</strong></h2>
<p>I’m Claire Wyatt, a professional UK voiceover artist with 20+ years’ experience. I offer:</p>
<ul>

<li>Transparent pricing and clear usage rights (no nasty surprises).</li>
<li>A friendly, reliable partnership with agencies who want to impress their clients.</li>
</ul>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-2164 size-large" src="https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Untitled-1200-x-800-px-1024x683.png" alt="hire-voiceover-artist-claire-wyatt" width="1024" height="683" srcset="https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Untitled-1200-x-800-px-1024x683.png 1024w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Untitled-1200-x-800-px-980x653.png 980w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Untitled-1200-x-800-px-480x320.png 480w" sizes="(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw" /></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h1>New Year? New Corporate Voiceover Demo Reel!</h1>
<p>I can smell spring in the air and it felt the right time to spring clean my demo reel. So, I&#8217;ve created a brand new<a href="https://clairewyatt.com/listen/corporate-narration/?et_fb=1&amp;PageSpeed=off"> corporate voiceover demo reel</a> for 2024. It&#8217;s got some fabulous recent work blended with some of my favourite pieces from the last few years.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s always a challenge putting these together as I&#8217;m trying to cram as many <a href="https://soundcloud.com/claire-wyatt/sets/vocal-styles-and-qualities" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tones and styles</a> into 2 minutes as possible. I&#8217;ve tried to <span class="animated-circle-highlight">capture my professional, yet authentic and engaging style</span><style type="text/css">.animated-circle-highlight svg { stroke: red; }.animated-circle-highlight svg { stroke: red; stroke-width: 2; }.animated-circle-highlight { color: #D55E1A !important; }</style><script>jQuery(document).ready(function($) {var svg = ' <svg version="1.1" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" x="0px" y="0px" viewBox="0 0 152.9 43.4" style="enable-background:new 0 0 152.9 43.4;" xml:space="preserve">     <path d="M151.9,13.6c0,0,3.3-5.5-85-4.5c-97,0.9-58.3,20-58.3,20s9.7,4.2,69.7,4.2c68.3,0,69.3-14.4,69.3-14.4s1.7-5.5-14.7-9.6"/>    </svg>';$(".animated-circle-highlight").prepend(svg);});</script> with some other corporate VO samples where I was asked to be more dynamic, chatty or soothing. The point is, I&#8217;m super versatile! I hope you like it!</p>
<p><iframe src="https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1740238239&amp;color=%23ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false&amp;show_teaser=true&amp;visual=true" width="100%" height="300" frameborder="no" scrolling="no"></iframe></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The work in here covers brand communications, online video, explainer videos, corporate films, animation and so much more. Please <a href="https://clairewyatt.com/get-in-touch/">get in touch</a> if you want to find out how I can help you tell your story and reach the hearts of your audience.</p>
<h2>A versatile voice over with style &#8211; but which one?</h2>
<p>If you want to hear more of my styles and tones and find out more about my work in other genres like commercials, then <a href="https://clairewyatt.com/2023/03/28/a-versatile-voiceover-artist-with-style-but-which-one/">read my blog all about my styles</a>. I&#8217;ve also created a step-by-step walkthrough of how I subtly change my voice, pace and delivery to create the perfect take. I call it using my<a href="https://clairewyatt.com/2021/06/17/voice-over-iq-and-eq/"> IQ to change the EQ</a> in my voice. There&#8217;s also plenty of examples of my English female voiceover services in corporate films and<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMXbYT7cgmo&amp;list=PL758C5107B2D67DEC" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> online explainers on my YouTube</a> channel.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a mash-up video of some of my favourite corporate video / online explainers I&#8217;ve done over the last few years. Enjoy!</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>A year of adaptation</h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 14px;">It’s become a tradition that I write a little review of my year as an English Female Voiceover artist. I like to reflect on my challenges and achievements and hold myself to account against the plans or aims I had at the start of the year. So far it’s been working pretty well for me. A simple motivational post-it note stuck on the studio wall keeps my mind on track and has produced some great results as you can read in my previous </span><a href="https://clairewyatt.com/2019/01/17/2018-review-of-a-year-in-voiceover/" style="font-size: 14px;">annual blogs</a><span style="font-size: 14px;">.</span></p>
<p><a href="https://clairewyatt.com/2020/01/30/2019-review-of-the-year-in-voiceover/" style="font-size: 14px;">2019 was a bumper year</a><span style="font-size: 14px;"> with awards, new demo reels, working in new fields and with great new clients and, of course, finally completing my family with the arrival of baby Ada.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-size: large;">So, how did 2020 work out?</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 14px;">Hmmmm.</p>
<p>Challenges, successes, adaptation and a global pandemic!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14px;">Life in January 2020 seems unrecognisable to me now. There were whisperings about a virus, but no effects here in the UK. My second child was 2 months old so I was just emerging from those crazy new-born weeks and recovering well from the c-section. I was looking forward to spring, getting out, getting fit and enjoying a blissful maternity break with the little one at home and my big girl at school. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14px;"><strong>What do they say? If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans!</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14px;">Only a few weeks into 2020 I think we all realised it was going to be a VERY different year. But I already knew that. The addition of Ada meant we were already expecting to be home more and working less. When you run your own business and have kids you have to be adaptable. And you never really get a break. I knew I needed to find a plan that would enable me to juggle work and childcare. So, me being me, I still wrote that post-it note and pinned it to the studio wall. Here’s what it said:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: 14px;">Somehow maintain my full-time income level despite maternity leave and coming back part time!</span></li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Work more in commercials (high value and minimal studio time – works around the baby)</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Promote my new demo reels</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Get new clients</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Get fit after the C-section and lose some weight</li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-size: 14px;">Simple right? Earn more but do less. What a lovely dream.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14px;"><strong>Reader, I did it.</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14px;">I’ve exceeded my income target, done some amazing commercial work that I’m so proud of and grateful for, won new clients and I can now run 5k! Ok, the weight hasn’t come off, but I’m fit and strong and that’s more important.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><!-- /divi:paragraph --></div>

			</div>

			</div><div class="et_pb_row et_pb_row_1">

<p> ing </p>
<h3>We’re all in the same storm, but we all have different boats.</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>2020 was a year of adaptation. When the pandemic first hit I felt grateful. I was already expecting to take an economic hit this year as we’d had a new baby. My husband and I planned to use the shared parental leave scheme so we knew one or other of us would have to be home, so adding our older daughter into the mix didn’t shock the family dynamics as much as other people. We already worked from home and have dedicated office and studio space. Having a garden and live in a semi-rural area meant we could get out easily. It was hard, but I was grateful for what we did have.</p>
<p>The ‘keep in touch day’ maternity system meant I could do the essential business work (VAT returns, admin and doing essential voiceover work) but I had to request a break from some long-standing regular clients. And huge thanks to them for pausing work and letting me come back. It’s not like you can get maternity cover for your own voice so I was frightened they’d move on to a new VO in my absence. </p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Things shift.</h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 14px;"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14px;">But as the pandemic dragged on things shifted and changes had to be made. Home-schooling a resistant 5 year old whilst exclusively breastfeeding a teething baby who doesn’t sleep at night nearly broke me. My husband’s business was reduced to about 30% of his usual income and we didn’t qualify for support (in the early stages) and we couldn’t form a bubble to help us with the kids.</span></p>
<p>The blissful maternity I dreamed of vanished. I was home with the kids and now frantically looking for work as well to make up the shortfall in the family income. It meant I had to work every second of those keep in touch days in any hours I could find and my husband did more of the home schooling. I missed my baby and grieved for the maternity I should have had, but was grateful I could press GO again on my business and earn while others couldn’t.</p>
<p>Lucky for me, the post-it plan paid off. People really responded well to the <a href="https://soundcloud.com/claire-wyatt/sets/demo-reels">new reels</a>, the SEO work on my website paid off and a few new key clients meant I got some amazing commercial work that saved us. Thank you Sainsbury and thank you Amazon!</p>
<h3>What have I learned?</h3>
<p>All those years of hard work have paid off.</p>
<ul>
<li>My website and SEO is working brilliantly and I regularly win work by clients coming direct to me. At the time it felt like time consuming tinkering, but now I get loads of enquiries from google searches and I’m regularly on page 1.</li>
<li>Being nice and easy to work with pays off. Clients are regularly recommending me to their contacts – the best way to win more work.</li>
<li>People I’ve worked with move on and then bring me into new companies. I’m finally gaining traction in high-end commercials, overseas work, gaming and other sectors.</li>
<li>Setting targets really does work. It keeps me focussed.</li>
</ul>
<h3> It aint all plain sailing</h3>
<p>But it’s been challenging beyond measure trying to juggle it all.</p>
<p>The main thing I’ve learned is that it’s impossible to do it all. I constantly feel like I’m failing and there is always a consequence. Work is good; kids get ignored…kids get attention; I drop balls at work. There is a reason why we have schools and nursery! I couldn’t have survived the year without my husband being here to play an equal role in the childcare and housework.</p>
<p>There’s been a relief this year too.<strong> I finally feel ‘seen’.</strong> Other parents have talked openly about how hard it is to work from home. How the work/life lines get blurred, how you always feel ‘on’ and how your focus is constantly split; you’re neither parenting nor working, you’re just managing both. It’s an impossible task which leaves you sometimes feeling that you’re failing at everything and it’s so dispiriting. This is how it’s always been for me. I don’t have ‘work’ days and ‘childcare’ days like some parents who return to conventional work. I run my own business. The emails constantly ping and the phone calls come in any time. Voiceoer is fast paced. Fail to reply and you miss a job or are too late for an audition. So, Monday to Friday I’m at work, but I’m home too. It’s been nice to see that other people find it hard. And it’s no wonder I’ve struggled over the years to find a balance.</p>
<p>So, having said that I felt I was set-up and ready for this, I think it’s made me realise that I’ve been stressed and living under crazy conditions for years. Which brings me to…</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3>What are my hopes for 2021?</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>GET THE KIDS BACK TO SCHOOL!</p>
<p>Do simple things like take the kids to a restaurant, get my toddler to a petting zoo, go on a camping holiday, see my parents and maybe, just maybe find a way to have a break from the kids and just sleep for 2 days!</p>
<p>And as for work? Anything after 2020 will feel easy. With Tilly at school and Ada at nursery life will feel like a holiday. I don’t think I have grand plans for 2021 like I’ve made before. I don’t want awards, or to blast income targets. I don’t want to get into new areas of work. I just want the kids to be happy and to rest to be honest. So, so long as I’m earning enough to meet our needs, I’ll gladly take some time off to heal from the most brutal year. </p>
<p>So the post-it note may look different this year, but the targets will be just as important;</p>
<ul>
<li>Meet financial needs, but don’t forget to meet my needs while I’m doing it.</li>
<li>Rest, play and enjoy the simple pleasures of a normal life seeing friends and family and watching the kids grow.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Come on 2021 – you can do this!</strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<h3>I smashed it again!</h3>
<!-- /divi:heading --> <!-- divi:paragraph -->
<p>Last year I started a new tradition: write a motivational list on a post-it note with personal and professional goals for the year and pin it to my studio wall.</p>
<!-- /divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph -->
<p>Well, it worked pretty well as you can read in <a href="https://clairewyatt.com/2019/01/17/2018-review-of-a-year-in-voiceover/">last year’s blog</a>. In 2018 I built a new studio, won an award, gained some great new clients and got healthy and strong.</p>
<!-- /divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph -->
<p>So, I decided I had to do it again. And guess what? It worked again!</p>
<!-- /divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph -->
<p>This was 2019’s list:</p>
<!-- /divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph -->
<ul>
<li>Win an award</li>
<li>Complete my family</li>
<li>Lose 1.5 stone (if not pregnant)</li>
<li>Get a regular new e-learning client</li>
<li>Get a new regular radio commercial client</li>
<li>Renew my Commercial demo reel</li>
<li>Maintain or improve my income</li>
<li>Do the loft extension</li>
<li>Read more books</li>
</ul>
<!-- /divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph -->
<p>Again, some stretching stuff in there – and some stuff out of my control. But it’s so useful to keep your goals front and centre and have a clear direction of travel.</p>
<!-- /divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:heading {"level":3} -->
<h3>So, how did I do?</h3>
<!-- /divi:heading --> <!-- divi:paragraph -->
<p><span style="font-size: 14px;">Well, I only went and smashed it again!</span></p>

I think it really captures my range, how my voice has changed and improved over the years and includes some more contemporary styles. I’ve also split it up into <a href="https://soundcloud.com/claire-wyatt/sets/vocal-styles-and-qualities">Vocal Styles</a> to make it easy for clients to pin-point exactly what they’re looking for.</span></li>
 	<li><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: small;">The loft extension was completed in time with the extra bedroom we needed which leads me to…</span></li>
 	<li><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: small;">After hitting the gym and eating well in 2018 and taking a well earned break from all things BABY to just focus on me, we decided to have one last try. I’m thrilled to say that on 12th November we welcomed baby Ada into our world. Just like her Mum and big sister she has a whacking set of lungs on her, so I’m clearly breeding the next generation of voiceover artists.</span></li>
 	<li><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: small;">I’ve continued working with the amazing <a href="https://braintracksaudio.com/">Nancy Wolfson</a> to keep my voice and skills in tip-top condition. Her training is keeping me fresh and ahead of the game in terms of commercial vocal styles and stopping me from falling into lazy bad habits. I want to make sure I’m <strong>always giving my clients the best</strong> and continued professional training and development is the best way to do it.</span></li>
 	<li><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: small;">I’ve developed a great relationship with<a href="https://www.maplestreetcreative.co.uk/"> Maple Street Creative</a> and have been doing <strong>loads of commercials</strong> with them.</span></li>
 	<li><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: small;">The TV has been on less. The phone has been put down more. Social media must think I’ve vanished. But <strong>I’ve read loads of books</strong> and I have to say I’m much happier for it. More books, more podcasts, more brain stretching stuff. Bliss.</span></li>
 	<li><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: small;">And, despite the ill health that I sadly suffer whenever I’m pregnant, and the last few months of the year being dominated by sleepless nights and nappies, I’ve somehow managed to <strong>earn more this year than last</strong>!</span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-size: 14px;">Well, that’s the post-it note sorted. But it doesn’t stop there! In addition in 2019 I …</span>
<ul>
 	<li>Became the voice of an <a href="https://www.wordshark.co.uk/">online game</a> and app that teaches kids to read</li>
 	<li>Started a great relationship with a mental health and wellbeing company providing the voiceovers for their inspirational and life changing training</li>
 	<li>Voiced my 1st ever long form <a href="https://www.blacklibrary.com/all-products/castle-of-blood-ebook-2019.html">audio book for Games Workshop</a>. I narrated it and voiced the 25+ characters (more than half of which were men!).</li>
 	<li>Picked up some new clients in America and I’m working some great agents and agencies over there too.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>
There’s probably more, but I can’t&nbsp; think!

<!-- /divi:image --> <!-- divi:paragraph -->
<h3>So, what does 2020 have in store?</h3>
Well, it’s going to be a tricky year as I negotiate running my business with two small children. But, I’m pretty confident it’s only going to bring good things. I’ve doubled my turn-over since having my 1st child, so let’s hope number 2 brings me the same luck!

But the real mission is to keep going. Keep servicing my clients with the top quality performance and production quality that they’re used to and for them to feel no ‘bump’ as I navigate my new, busier road.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Well what a year that was!</h3>

<p>As many of you may know, it didn’t get off to the best start with some personal loss and sadness in early January. But, I’m never one to be defeated by what the world throws at me so instead; I threw myself into life head-first and set myself some challenges. So, let&#8217;s see what a year in voiceover can bring.</p>

<p><strong>In early January I wrote a very important post-it note. </strong>I set myself business and personal challenges and I stuck it on my monitor as a daily reminder. This is what it said:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><em>Win an award</em></li><li><em>Lose 2 stone (I&#8217;m not weight obsessed but illness had taken it&#8217;s toll)</em></li><li><em>Build a new studio</em></li><li><em>Win new clients with my new ISDN line</em></li><li><em>Win new clients in general!</em></li><li><em>Organise some training to continue to improve my voice</em></li><li><em>Complete my family</em></li></ul>

<p>Pretty stretching stuff I think you’ll agree. Add a
pre-school kid into the mix (she didn’t start until September) and a husband having
a hip replacement over the summer and it all starts to sound vaguely
ridiculous. I mean, how many hours do I think there are in a day?!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Wanna know how I did?</h3>

<p><strong>I smashed it!</strong> Well, nearly! Of course there are some things we have no control over (not pregnant!). But, all the things within my control have gone brilliantly.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="814" src="https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/OneVoiceNominee-1024x814.png" alt="Female Voiceover Artist of the Year" class="wp-image-610" srcset="https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/OneVoiceNominee-1024x814.png 1024w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/OneVoiceNominee-300x238.png 300w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/OneVoiceNominee-768x610.png 768w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/OneVoiceNominee-1080x858.png 1080w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/OneVoiceNominee.png 900w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>I designed, built and kitted out my <a href="http://www.clairewyatt.com/2018/07/20/now-work-voiceover-studio-like/">brand new and upgraded sound studio </a></li><li>I installed an <a href="http://www.clairewyatt.com/2018/04/10/isdn-connection-now-live/">ISDN line</a> and I’m thrilled to be working with new clients because of it </li><li>I was a finalist in the <strong>Female Voiceover Artist of the Year</strong> category at the One Voice Awards. I was also a finalist in the <strong>Best Overall Performance in the Corporate/Explainer&nbsp;Category </strong>and the&nbsp;<strong>Best Female Radio Drama Performance</strong>. Sadly, I didn’t win, but <a href="http://www.clairewyatt.com/2018/02/27/female-voiceover-artist-of-the-year-nominee/">three nominations</a> is pretty darned good in my books.<strong> </strong></li><li>I’ve been hitting the gym all year and eating a healthy, balanced diet. When I started I couldn’t run for 30 seconds without feeling sick and getting very wobbly. 12 months on, I can run 5k with ease and I’ve lost 2 stone in weight. I can just about manage to do 10k so long as I walk here and there and I’m aiming for another 2 stone next year. Huzzah! <strong>And all that fitness improves my breath control so I&#8217;m a better VO artist to boot. </strong>Winner, winner low fat chicken dinner!</li><li>I’m working with the amazing <a href="https://braintracksaudio.com/">Nancy Wolfson</a> to keep my voice and skills in tip-top condition. Her training is keeping me fresh and ahead of the game in terms of commercial vocal styles and stopping me from falling into lazy bad habits. I want to make sure <strong>I’m always giving my clients the best </strong>and continued professional training and development is the best way to do it. </li></ul>

<p>Well, that’s the post-it note sorted. But it doesn’t stop
there! In addition in 2018 I have…</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Voiced my 1<sup>st</sup> ever video game (still under NDA so I can’t tell you – gah!)</li><li>Been heard in Cinemas for the 1<sup>st</sup> time in a commercial</li><li>Completed my 1<sup>st</sup> ELT job (English Language Training)</li><li>Won my 1<sup>st</sup> ever Continuity gig (more on that in 2019)</li><li>Voiced countless <a href="https://soundcloud.com/claire-wyatt/sets/halloween">Halloween </a>and Christmas commercials across UK radio</li><li>ATA Girl, the audio drama I starred in, has been s<a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/1RQrnzw2pxjZr04jxZ3PWp6/the-2019-shortlist?fbclid=IwAR31zlFy82lJdgCGeo9i2UAKVAksYuKjuCkFedwkCs1jVi_vm27t2PTkzrI" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="hortlisted in the BBC Audio Drama Awards (opens in a new tab)">hortlisted in the BBC Audio Drama Awards </a></li></ul>

<p>And of course, I think I voiced about 15 GDPR scripts and
yet I still have absolutely no bloody idea what is right and wrong! I think
we’re all in the same boat there right?</p>

<p>Obviously there’s more &#8211; like attempting to understand Instagram, learning epic new hacks in my DAW (Reaper) that speeds up and improves my editing and production and attending my first <a href="https://clairewyatt.com/2018/11/12/e-learning-is-all-about-engagement/">e-learning conference</a>. It’s been a busy and successful year and I’m so thrilled to have achieved so much. Especially considering the personal challenges along the way. So a huge thanks to my clients and colleagues who’ve been there on the journey with me. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">So, what does 2019 hold?</h3>

<p>Hopefully more fantastic work with my existing clients and I
hope to add some new ones too. I’m going to continue my training to make sure
I’m offering the best quality work and stretch my voice into new dimensions. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" width="800" height="800" src="https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Post-it-2018.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-799" srcset="https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Post-it-2018.jpg 800w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Post-it-2018-150x150.jpg 150w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Post-it-2018-300x300.jpg 300w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Post-it-2018-768x768.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></figure>

<p>I’d love to work more in gaming and cinema and I’m really
excited to be moving in to Continuity too.</p>

<p>The main thing is that <strong>I still love my job. I just love that every day is different. </strong>I work across drama, commercials, education, corporate, continuity and more. I’ve voiced for various sectors including the built environment, education, charity, retail, finance and countless others. Who knows what 2019 holds? But I think I need to sit down with a gin and write another post-it note – they clearly work!</p>

<p>Ungh! Don&#8217;t you just hate jargon? Acronyms and abbreviations, technical language and endless new words and phrases that boggle your brain and make you feel stupid and alienated. What you need is a glossary for voiceover!</p>
<p>I know that when I first joined the industry I felt like I was tasked with learning a whole new language to do a good job. And that&#8217;s certainly got worse since so many of us now have <a href="https://clairewyatt.com/studio-rates/">our own home studios</a> and have to manage the technology and kit. I&#8217;m not just a voiceover artist these days. I&#8217;m an audio engineer too!</p>
<p>So, I thought I&#8217;d help you out if you&#8217;re as confused as I was with a short glossary for voiceover artists of the most commonly used acronyms and abbreviations you&#8217;ll need to know.</p>
<p>Please <a href="https://clairewyatt.com/get-in-touch/">drop me a lin</a>e or make a comment if you think there are some obvious ones I&#8217;ve missed out.</p>
<h2>An A-Z of Jargon</h2>
<p><strong>ADR</strong> &#8211; Automated Dialogue Replacement, sometimes also called Additional Dialogue Recording, Looping or Loopgroup work. This is a process in the film and TV industry where actors and voice artists supply all the additional dialogue required for the soundscape of a production. E.g. the other punters in a cafe where the lead actors are chatting, radio announcements in the distance, henchmen grunting and lots and lots of women screaming! Often dubbing is involved if the main dialogue sound wasn&#8217;t good enough on the day.</p>
<p><strong>Cardioid</strong> – heart-shaped region where some microphones will be most sensitive to sound.</p>
<p><strong>CODEC &#8211;  </strong>a device (usually used if you have an ISDN line) or computer program for encoding or decoding a digital data stream or signal. Codec is a portmanteau of coder-decoder. A codec encodes a data stream or a signal for transmission and storage, possibly in encrypted form, and the decoder function reverses the encoding for playback or editing.</p>
<p><strong>Compressor/decompressor &#8211;</strong> a piece of software that converts a raw stream of uncompressed data to a compressed form. The same piece of software can also play the compressed video on-screen.</p>
<p><strong>Decibel</strong>– a measurement of sound. Abbreviated dB, it is one-tenth of a Bel (a unit of measurement named for Alexander Graham Bell).</p>
<p><strong>EQ &#8211; </strong>is an abbreviation of an equalizer. In layman&#8217;s terms it&#8217;s a way of turning up or down the volume for different frequencies (bass, treble etc.)</p>
<p><strong>FLAC &#8211; </strong>stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec,. It&#8217;s an audio format similar to MP3, but lossless, meaning that audio is compressed in FLAC without any loss in quality.</p>
<p><strong>Frequency</strong> – cycles per second, expressed in Hertz (Hz) or the number of cycles in a given time period.</p>
<p><strong>Gain</strong> – The amplification of the electronic signal created by your mic.</p>
<p><strong>Gate</strong> – an audio processor that allows signals to pass only above a certain setting or threshold. Used if you want to eliminate a low room rumble for example.</p>
<h2>You&#8217;re half way there! Keep going!</h2>
<p><strong>Hertz (Hz)</strong> – cycles per second of an electrical signal.</p>
<p><strong>IP</strong> (internet protocol) – standard networking protocol, or method, which enables data to be sent from one computer or device to another over the Internet.</p>
<p><strong>ipDTL &#8211; </strong>a web based alternative to an ISDN line. Find out more <a href="https://ipdtl.com/gb/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.</p>
<p><strong>ISDN &#8211; </strong>or Integrated Services Digital Network, is an international standard for end to end digital transmission of voice, data and signaling. You need to have a line installed into your studio and use a Codec.</p>
<p><strong>IVR &#8211; </strong>Interactive voice response is a posh word for phone systems! It&#8217;s the technology that allows businesses to interact with clients through the use of voice and tones input via a keypad. It&#8217;s what you hear when you&#8217;re on hold and have press a million options to finally get frustrated and speak to an operator!</p>
<p><strong>MP3 &#8211; </strong>an audio coding format that is compressed to make it easy to send and share.</p>
<p><strong>Peak</strong> – the highest level of signal strength, determined by the height of the signal’s waveform.</p>
<p><strong>Phantom power</strong> – a direct current (DC) power source available in various voltages.</p>
<p><strong>VO &#8211; </strong>Voiceover &#8211; well, duh!</p>
<p><strong>WAV &#8211;</strong> Waveform Audio File Format (WAVE, or more commonly known as WAV due to its filename extension)is a Microsoft and IBM audio file format standard for storing an audio.</p>
<p><strong>XLR &#8211; </strong>is a 3-pin connector generally used to connect microphones to a console and other balanced audio feeds. Pin 2 is the (+) positive connection, Pin 3 is the (-) negative connection, and Pin 1 is the &#8220;ground&#8221; or &#8220;shield&#8221; connection of the balanced cable.</p>
<h2>Still confused?</h2>
<p>I found this amazing glossary of terms for Sound Engineers. Way too much for the average voiceover, but you may find what you&#8217;re looking for in there &#8211; <a href="http://www.testing1212.co.uk/a">http://www.testing1212.co.uk/a</a></p></div>

					<description><![CDATA[<p>A journey through my voiceover career via my voiceover studio and equipment. Where did I start? What did I learn? Why is my current studio the best? </p>
<p>The post <a href="https://clairewyatt.com/2018/07/19/evolution-voiceover-studio/">The evolution of my voiceover studio</a> appeared first on <a href="https://clairewyatt.com">Claire Wyatt Female Voiceover</a>.</p>
]]></description>
										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h1>From basic beginnings to a broadcast quality studio; this is the story of my home-studio evolution!</h1>
<p>I&#8217;m constantly asked how I started out in voiceover. How I went from a total beginner to someone with her own <a href="https://clairewyatt.com/studio-rates/">professional home studio</a> and <a href="https://clairewyatt.com/clients/">clients</a> all around the world. So, I thought I&#8217;d make a little video and put this blog together to tell some of the story.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m focusing mainly on the studio and technical evolution here rather than talking about the training, personal development, marketing, branding and endless hard slog that has built my business. I hope it&#8217;s interesting or useful, or both! Here goes&#8230;</p>
<p><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/T9rQFEYMMsM" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p>
<h2>How did it all start?</h2>
<p>I got my first professional job while I was still at drama school. I recorded a series of <a href="https://clairewyatt.com/listen/e-learning-voiceover/">e-learning</a> projects at a local producers home studio. At the time I was super impressed and thought I&#8217;d never figure out how all that recording equipment and editing software would work. I was glad I was the other side of the mic! But you have to remember, this was the late 90s. Ancient history to some of you! At the time I&#8217;d only recently bought my 1st ever mobile phone and only had access to a communal University PC. The idea of having the space, cash and knowledge to set up a studio seemed impossible.</p>
<p>But I soon discovered that as an English voiceover artist with a neutral RP accent, there was a lot of demand for my voice &#8211; especially in the e-learning and corporate world. Word spread from client to client and I kept booking more gigs. Always in other people&#8217;s studios dotted around the UK but mostly in London. I loved the work. So, I took some classes, listened to radio and TV commercials like a loon and had my first demo reels made.</p>
<p>And then I did nothing. Like a prat! It took me a while to find the money and confidence to set up at home. But once I did, I never looked back.</p>
<p>So, less about the why and how, and more about the kit.</p>
<p>______________________________________________________________________________________________________</p>
<h3>My 1st studio</h3>
<p>It was basic! A second-hand mic that was better suited to live music, an ancient interface and a mic stand. The rest was all pillow forts and crossed fingers! But it served it&#8217;s purpose. I gained confidence in self-direction, learned the basics of audio recording and editing (using Audacity freeware) and started to build up a list of clients who wanted to work with home voiceover artists.</p>
<p><strong><img decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-721 alignright" src="https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-1-300x225.png" alt="" width="300" height="225" srcset="https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-1-300x225.png 300w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-1-768x575.png 768w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-1-1024x767.png 1024w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-1-510x382.png 510w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-1-1080x809.png 1080w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-1.png 900w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />The kit:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Rode NT3 mic</li>
<li>Roland Edirol UA-25 interface</li>
<li>Basic mic stand and reflection filter</li>
<li>Audacity</li>
</ul>
<p>The sound quality was obviously poor. But it was a great way to start. I was always honest with my clients about my set-up and I made sure that I always sent a sample recording first.</p>
<h3></h3>
<p>_________________________________________________________________________________________________________</p>
<h3>Studio 2 &#8211; my first build attempt</h3>
<p>It didn&#8217;t take long for me to realise if I wanted to build my career, I needed to invest in myself. So, I built a private studio (a room within a room) in my office. I upgraded my mic and kit, invested in much better editing software and really started to push my voice over career. Boy did it pay off! The better sound quality I was achieving, coupled with my improved abilities as a voiceover and editor, meant that the work stared to flow in. I picked up an agent, improved my branding and marketing efforts and started to work in new areas of the industry. It was great!</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-724 alignright" src="https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-2-1-300x225.png" alt="broadcast quality home studio" width="300" height="225" srcset="https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-2-1-300x225.png 300w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-2-1-768x575.png 768w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-2-1-1024x767.png 1024w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-2-1-510x382.png 510w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-2-1-1080x809.png 1080w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-2-1.png 900w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /><strong>The kit:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Rode NT1a</li>
<li>Audiobox USB interface</li>
<li>Reaper editing software</li>
</ul>
<p>So, why change things?</p>
<p>Well, I made mistakes when I built the studio. Sound insulation needed to be improved, ventilation and light was poor, it was small and I wanted an ISDN line and another equipment upgrade.#</p>
<p>_______________________________________________________________________________________________________</p>
<h3>Studio 3 &#8211; my current set-up</h3>
<p>Ahhhh, now that&#8217;s better! Months of research and planning. Thousands of pounds in materials, builders fees, the latest equipment upgrades and I am now one very happy voiceover artist. And, best of all, my clients are thrilled too! I knocked down the old office and studio and did a total re-build. Broadcast quality sound insulation, the best acoustic treatment and the brand new cables and equipment. Mmmmm, yummy!</p>
<p>I now have the space, equipment, confidence and ability to serve all aspects of the voiceover industry, plus my new ISDN line is live!</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-725 alignright" src="https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-3-300x224.png" alt="English voiceover home studio" width="300" height="224" srcset="https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-3-300x224.png 300w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-3-768x572.png 768w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-3-1024x763.png 1024w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-3-510x382.png 510w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-3-1080x805.png 1080w, https://clairewyatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Studio-3.png 900w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /><strong>The kit:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Rode NT1A Mic</li>
<li>Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB interface</li>
<li>CCS Musicam Prima LT Codec</li>
<li>Soundcraft EPM6 mixer with a PDM-300 desk mic for in-booth communications</li>
<li>Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro (80 OHM) headphones</li>
</ul>
<p>You can watch more videos all about the studio on my <a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLow8vD3vJW49PoPZberi7p5v3KpIw6y_u" target="_blank" rel="noopener">YouTube page</a> where I have video tours, a guide to the build process and other fund stuff like sound tests.</p>
<p>_______________________________________________________________________________________________________</p>
<h2>So, what&#8217;s the lesson here?</h2>
<p>Well, I guess it&#8217;s that nothing is static. The industry is always evolving and so my business is too. As I learn and improve I have to change my studio and equipment to work in new markets and I have to keep up with trends and technology too. We need to embrace that. I know I do. I love learning and stretching myself. I love voice work, but I love running a business too.</p>
<p>If I reflect on the last 20 years of my career, what do I wish?</p>
<ul>
<li>I wish I&#8217;d found the confidence to start home studio work earlier.</li>
<li>I wish I&#8217;d known that it&#8217;s ok to fake it until you make it.</li>
<li>I wish I&#8217;d realised that it&#8217;s quicker to ask for forgiveness than wait for permission.  As soon as I threw off the shackles of self-doubt and invested in myself like a professional, I was treated like one.</li>
</ul>
<p>I&#8217;m brilliant at my job and I love it. Let&#8217;s see what the next 20 years brings eh?</p>

					<description><![CDATA[<p>A blind mic shootout to test mics in the £50-500 range for a female voiceover.</p>
<p>The post <a href="https://clairewyatt.com/2018/07/10/blind-mic-shootout-female-voiceover/">Blind Mic shootout &#8211; female voiceover</a> appeared first on <a href="https://clairewyatt.com">Claire Wyatt Female Voiceover</a>.</p>
]]></description>
										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h1>What mic should I choose? What&#8217;s best for a female voiceover? Does price really matter? Time for a blind mic shootout!</h1>
<p>All good questions and ones that I see A LOT on voiceover forums &#8211; especially from beginners. The dizzying choice of mics from £50 to multiple thousands of pounds can make your head spin. And once you scratch the surface you realise that everyone has a different opinion, every voice is different (and therefore suits a different mic) and every studio has different acoustic.</p>
<p>Arrrrghhhh! Maddening right? I know it drove me nuts when I started.</p>
<p>So, I&#8217;m adding this blog to the already over-crowded field of info and options on mics in the hope that it will help someone.</p>
<h2>The shootout</h2>
<p>The wonderful <a href="https://beeproductive.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rob Bee</a> (sound engineer, studio whisperer and all round good guy) came to see my at my <a href="https://clairewyatt.com/studio-rates/">home studio</a> recently. He brought a whole heap of mics in the £50 &#8211; £500 bracket for me to try. I was pretty happy with my current mic, but it&#8217;s always good to see what else is out there. And it&#8217;s SOOOO easy to fall into the self-doubt trap when so many other voice artists talk about their mics and you wonder &#8216;Is mine as good at theirs&#8217;.</p>
<p>So, anyway, here&#8217;s the video I made. Have a listen and see what you think. Obviously it&#8217;ll make a difference how you&#8217;re listening. Watching on your mobile phone with cheap headphones is never going to reveal some of the subtle differences as well as decent speakers in a sound studio.</p>
<p><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ybpbOwxtqpw" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s just the sound file:<br />
<iframe src="https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/469738497&amp;color=%23ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false&amp;show_teaser=true" width="100%" height="166" frameborder="no" scrolling="no"></iframe></p>
<p>So, what did you think? Did you have a favourite? Was it the same as mine? I&#8217;d love to know.</p>
<p>I could clearly hear a lot of mic noise on some, a thin sound on others, some sounded cheap and others just didn&#8217;t sound good/different enough for me to warrant buying a new mic.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>WARNING!!! Do not read below this line unless you want to find out what the mics are.<br />
Watch the video first.</strong></h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2>The mics (and rough prices)</h2>
<ol>
<li>Rode NT1a &#8211; £130</li>
<li>Focusrite CM25 &#8211; £50</li>
<li>Aston Origin &#8211; £200</li>
<li>Sennehiser MK4 &#8211; £250</li>
<li>Lewitt LCT540 &#8211; £500</li>
<li>Sonotronics STC3X &#8211; £250</li>
</ol>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2>The result</h2>
<p>Both Rob and I preferred the Rode NT1a.<br />
<iframe style="width: 120px; height: 240px;" src="//ws-eu.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;OneJS=1&amp;Operation=GetAdHtml&amp;MarketPlace=GB&amp;source=ac&amp;ref=tf_til&amp;ad_type=product_link&amp;tracking_id=clairewyattvo-21&amp;marketplace=amazon&amp;region=GB&amp;placement=B0002PSCQM&amp;asins=B0002PSCQM&amp;linkId=b3fe5c7e889a8f745927f3f9a102f221&amp;show_border=false&amp;link_opens_in_new_window=false&amp;price_color=545454&amp;title_color=007677&amp;bg_color=ffffff" width="300" height="150" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no"><br />
</iframe><br />
It&#8217;s quiet, clear and clean and suits the middle part of my voice so perfect for a general mic. It&#8217;s cheap too! And it&#8217;s my current mic. Winner!</p>
<p>So, was it a waste of time? No way! I&#8217;ve tried a few mics and realised again that the combination of voice, environment and purpose should dictate mic choice and not brand and price. I really can&#8217;t stress enough that every mic is different, every voice is different and every studio is different. Just cos we preferred the Rode doesn&#8217;t mean the other mics are no good. The Rode is right for me in this studio at the moment. I will be trying some more expensive mics when I can get my hands on them to see if they are worth the investment. And, as I age and my voice changes, I&#8217;ll change mics again I expect!</p>
<p>Thanks for reading and watching and <a href="https://clairewyatt.com/get-in-touch/">get in touch</a> if you&#8217;d like to find out more or if you have questions.</p>
