What cost low cost?

How much?!!

I’m sure you’ve screamed that when you’ve heard what a voiceover can earn for voicing a TV spot for a major brand; many thousands of pounds in a matter of minutes.

And I’m sure you’ve been agog at how little some, supposed professionals will record 200 words of audio for any use, in perpetuity for $5 via certain websites. So, who’s right?

Well, the truth is, pricing in the voiceover world can be confusing. I charge e-learning work by the word, TV commercials are based on TVRs, radio is based on listening figures, negotiated with the stations/producers by Equity, IVR can be charged per prompt and the internet is basically the Wild West! Plus there’s all the acronyms to get used to; IVR, TVR, BSF etc.

So how does it work?

All too often when I quote new clients reasonable, fair prices they tell me they can get it cheaper by going to various dubious websites. These places are stuffed to the gills with people offering voiceover services at crazy rock-bottom prices. So why shouldn’t you just use them?

I hope this blog will help clients understand why paying more makes sound business sense, as well as helping new voiceover artists understand why experienced artists rates are higher.

It’s all about price vs. value. Here are my five top reasons why experienced voiceover artists give you real value for money.

1: Experience delivers

I’ve been doing this a long time. So I make it look easy. That’s experience.

It might take a beginner twice as long to record the vocals on a corporate video. The director may have to coach them on every sentence. It might even mean you have to pay them more, as you haven’t managed to do the job in the allotted studio time. Now, beginners have to start somewhere. This isn’t about doing them down.

But I’m talking about value.

I can have a brief conversation with the client about the tone/style/energy they’re looking for, think about the audience it’s designed for and usually nail the job within the first few takes. If they want it 30 seconds faster without sounding rushed, I can do it. Or, if they want it professional, but friendly, energetic but at a slow pace, authoritative but not aggressive – I can do it. That’s experience and that’s added value.

That ability to give an uncertain client options, to work fast to keep studio costs down, to be able to take direction and build on it; all of that is what you’re paying for.

2: Time’s a ticking

Obviously part of the cost of the voiceover is how long the job takes. Again, the added value with an experienced professional is that I’ll often complete the job within the first or second read, so recording is fast. And as an experienced editor, I’m saving you time there too. Less time, less cost. Simple.

3: Does it have to be SoHo dahhing?

You’ll always need to record the VO somewhere. Usually a client will have to hire a sound studio (and engineer) which the VO will travel to.

I have a home studio which adds huge value to my clients.

I’ve invested time, energy and thousands of pounds in building a broadcast-quality audio booth. My studio is so well insulated and quiet that I don’t require any post production or noise removal. What you get is perfect clarity and all the warmth and depth you’d expect from a fully acoustically treated professional space. It has all the latest kit for recording and editing and involving the client. You can listen in live to session via Skype, Google Hangouts, ipDTL, ISDN, Source Connect Now or good-old-fashioned land line.

In comparison, there are VOs out there who have cheap mics, shove their head under a duvet and hope. It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway, you can hear the difference.

4: Your colleague with a ‘nice’ voice is just that

There is a world of difference between ‘Susan from Accounts who’s got a nice voice’ and a professional voiceover artist. Just listen to most small businesses voicemail messages. Susan may be clear, but she has no charm!

Voiceover is an art form. It’s not just talking. The subtle vocal manipulations required to nail the exact tone a client wants, in the exact time to fit the visuals takes talent. And hard graft. I’ve trained for 14 years (I never stop learning) and so, I can work in e-learning, corporate work, character and accents, advertising, drama and more. Each sector of the industry needs different vocal skills – and that’s before we even start to talk about the business of managing a home studio and all the audio kit.

5: Where? When? How? Usage counts

How the content I voice will be used and distributed has a huge impact on the final cost. This is the bit most people get confused about or forget. It’s all about how many people will see/hear it and for how long. So, a commercial for Coke during the X Factor final will cost more than a commercial for a local plumber on a small local radio station at 4 o’clock in the morning. It’s about exposure.

We use the term ‘buy-out’ a lot. A client is buying the right to use our voice for a specific purpose for a set amount of time. If I voiced a massive and distinctive campaign for Tesco they would have to give me a generous buyout to compensate me for the fact that no other retail brand is likely to use my voice for a long while, as I’d be associated with them.

So, that’s why usage costs vary. But if you’re reaching more people or requiring exclusivity, you pay more. And that’s fair.

So where does that leave us?

With a simple choice. And it’s a choice we all make, whatever we buy. You can pay less and risk getting a poor product or pay more and be sure you’ll get what you need. My family has a saying, ‘Buy cheap, buy twice’ I think that applies here. Pay for the experience, knowledge, skills and facilities you need – and you won’t regret what you’ve spent. Go cheap, and that’s exactly how it will sound.

Everyone wants a bargain. And sometimes we’re willing to take a risk on a lesser-known brand to get that bargain. And that’s fine if we’re talking about your favourite soft drink. But as professionals, with clients, deadlines and little room for a miss-step, going cheap is a risk that’s just not worth taking.

My first job for Audible and it’s an epic audio drama adventure

I was thrilled to be asked by the fantastic director Barnaby Edwards to be part of a three-part narrated audio drama for Audible.
The original drama is called Apprentice – Scarlet City – Part I. I played a couple of parts, but most notably the sassy and seductive Lillian who uses her looks and wit to great effect! I won’t say more as it will spoil it for you.

So, what’s it all about?

Here’s the Publisher’s Summary:

This Original multicast drama blends history with fiction to tell the story of Jonah, a young apprentice from London who raises himself from poverty by wit and luck to become one of the most powerful merchants of the age.

A rags-to-riches tale, Jonah’s journey spans the breadth of human experience, from the intricacies of Edward III’s political intrigues to the cutthroat world of international trade, from the triumphs of war to the agonies of personal loss – love, friendship, joy, heartbreak and glory. Set largely in London, the Scarlet City, the centre of medieval England, the Scarlet City trilogy is a thrilling portrait of the age and the people who made it so rich, colourful and extraordinary.

London, 1330. Jonah Durham grows up in the household of his tyrannical cousin Rupert, and only his grandmother, the calculating Cecilia Hillock, recognizes his talent and intelligence. After her death he inherits a handsome fortune, bestowing him with both wealth and independence but also the wrath of his increasingly dangerous cousin.

Pre-order my most recent audio drama from the team at Big Finish now! Great scripts and always a voiceover challenge.

My voiceover skills are usually put to the test on these fabulous audio drama sci-fi jobs (playing anything from telepathic Hyenas to sentient computers!) but with this one I’m playing a human. This is the first Torchwood I’ve done so it was fabulous to work with Tracy-Ann Oberman and a delight to be reunited with the wonderful Barnaby Edwards as director.

The day started with a surprise as I’d prepared my character as a Londoner but it soon became clear that I sounded too much like another actress in the cast. A quick on-the-spot whizz through a few accents choices and we settled on Bristolian. It actually made the character even more fun and unique.

Working with legends!

Now, Big Finish jobs are always fun. They have a knack for putting great teams together, the lunches are legendary and the scripts always brilliant. AND you get to work some absolute legends. For once it wasn’t a Doctor! This time I had the pleasure of working with Jane Asher and Trev from Trev and Simon (my pant-swinging 80s childhood hero!).

You can pre-order your copy now by going to the Big Finish Website.

Over the years I’ve taken on many characters and impersonations. The bulk of my voiceover work uses my natural voice, so when these jobs come up I relish the challenge.

As an actor I gained a reputation as the go-to person for playing multiple roles in one show. In fact, I’ve rarely ever been in a show where I only play one character! It requires an active imagination, an ability to manipulate your body, a willingness to make a fool of yourself and, of course, a great ear for accents and vocal character.

And it’s not just inventing characters. I’ve had to impersonate real people too. It takes a lot of listening and playing around before you find all the elements that make up someones voice. Are they breathy, nasal or shrill? What pitch and speed do they talk at? Is there a defect or impediment? What shapes do they make with their mouths and faces to form the sounds? Detailed research and a lot of hard graft but I get there in the end.

Anne Hegarty from The Chaser

What’s great is that all my theatre training and experience is now bleeding into my voiceover work. A recent client found me via Google precisely because they needed a skilled voiceover artist who could also do impersonations. They needed someone to impersonate some people from the TV game show The Chaser as well as coming up with characters playing the game. It was a lot of fun. Sadly, I’m not allowed to share the content so I’ll have to leave it to your imagination. But they did share the avatars with me.

Jenny Ryan from The Chaser

My many acting roles

Here’s just a selection of some of the shows I’ve done where I’ve had to take on characters and do impersonations:

Vanity Fair by William Thackeray. I played the wealthy, grouchy and flamboyant octogenarian Lady Steyne as well as an hilarious and loving Irish military wife. I also played a teenager, a middle aged mum and a sour and snobbish Governess.

Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand. In this I played a man. Yup, you heard that right. At 5’2″ and the tender age of 25 I played the comic role of Ragueneau the pastry chef as well as a few extra characters here and there.

Coronation Street on Stage by Jonathan Harvey. To celebrate 50 years of the iconic soap we toured and amazing show featuring some of the most famous characters and scenes. It was the hardest job and most epic vocal challenge of my life! I played 11 characters including Vera Duckworth, Elsie Tanner, Annie Walker and Hayley Walker. The hardest part was doing an accurate impersonation but one that would work on stage to audiences in their 1000s. A breathy TV voice would never carry. So I had to adapt the voice but still sound like the character. Not easy! And then you add the millions of costume and wig changes. I was a sweaty mess by the end of each show.

You can see a short video of me playing Annie Walker on YouTube – watch from about 45 seconds in.

“Claire Wyatt is an instantly recognisable Elsie Tanner, her Vera Duckworth pairs well with Lailey’s Jack, but the audience’s hearts almost audibly go out to her Hayley and Sangster’s Roy Cropper.” Theatre Review

Some memorable Doctor Who Audio drama characters

The Boy that Time Forgot – I played Madam Teegarna, a Scorpion-like alien military leader, as well as other minor characters.

Exotron – in this I played a telepathic hyena called a Farakosh, a young Northern technician and a computer!

Return to the Web Planet – I played Mother Earth herself in this spooky existential tale.

The Silver Turk – this was fun to record as I had to play the posh Countess Mitzi Wittenmeier as well as her young Scottish maid in the same scene. I also played at least three more minor characters.

I also use my character skills for radio commercials too. And of course there’s Halloween and the Xmas season approaching!

Choosing the right voice for your E-Learning services can be hard.

You want to be authoritative but approachable, encouraging but not patronising and fun but not childish. It’s all about understanding your audience and finding a voice that can blend together everything that you need. That’s what I do best!

Listening to what you want and understanding what your audience needs

I’ve voiced e-learning projects for the banking, medical, sustainability, charity and the construction sectors. I’ve found the right tone for anything from trainee hairdressers to disaster management training. Every project is different and I always start by asking “Who am I talking to?” Understanding my audience and what motivates them helps me speak in a way that will really communicate WITH them, rather than just talking AT them. Obviously the script helps! A really well written E-Learning script makes a huge difference. A script that understands you’re talking to someone and not just regurgitating a written manual! And, no matter what the subject matter, peppering the script with a little humour can really help. But mostly it’s about being genuinely enaged and interested.

I’m passionate about E-learning. I find it exciting that I’m always learning when I voice a project – I pass that excitement on your audience.

And, you’ve no need to worry about quality! I work from my own broadcast quality home studio with all the latest kit.

What do my clients think?

“She is professional, reliable, an excellent communicator and most importantly – gets the job done on time and within budget.”

I have lots of regular E-Learning clients who use me again and again because I’m fast, efficient, affordable and easy to work with. And the quality is top notch too!

“Working with Claire is a breath of fresh air. She is personable, responsive and super efficient. Her work is high quality.”

Clients have included Tesco, DHL, Barclays, Unilever and the National Trust.

“Claire came prepared with ideas and added extra life to our project.”

So, whether it’s empowering and educating your staff, communicating complex and technical information or teaching the next generation to read, I’ve become the trusted voice for various E-Learning and Education suppliers. I have an approachable, encouraging (but never patronising), reassuring and relatable voice and I can also be calm, bubbly and cheeky; we’ll find the tone that’s right for your brand and audience together.

Something a little different?

I’m also great with characters and accents so if your project requires various personalities or even impressions – just let me know! I recently did a job where I had to impersonate the various characters on TV Game Show The Chaser! And know how to source other professional voice artists, so if you need multiple voices that I can’t do, I’m sure I can help.

And don’t be limited to what’s on this reel. I’m super versatile and can usually accommodate any request. I’ve been hired repeatedly for Doctor Who audio dramas precisely because I can play anything from a telepathic hyena to an evil Scorpion military leader. And I can do cute characters too like little kids and fairy Godmothers.

From telepathic hyenas and scorpion Queens, to evil countesses and lowly maids. If you’re going to be a voice actor in radio drama, you need to be versatile.

I spent another joyous day with the team at Big Finish productions last week recording an episode of Torchwood. It’s all hush hush at the moment until it’s released, but I can talk about the other great projects I’ve done for them. And I can tell you this – it’s never a dull day and I usually die at least once!

My first encounter with Big Finish (the production company that make audio content for Doctor Who, Torchwood and other great sci-fi hits) was back in 2007. It was a bit of a trial by fire! I got a call and was asked if I could do the voice of a telepathic hyena! “Sure!” I said without the first clue as to how I would do it. “Oh, and you’ll also be playing a construction worker, some tannoy announcements and the voice of a sentient computer” says the lovely director. “No problem” I say while swallowing down my terror. Multi-roling is what I’m well known for in my acting life, but with audio work it’s even harder. You have no costume or physicality to help differentiate your characters for the audience.

In audio drama your skills are stripped bare – it’s just your voice and the imagination of the listener. A challenge I relish! The job was Exotron. A Doctor Who story with Peter Davison and Nicola Bryant. I had an absolute blast and it obviously went well as I was soon asked back to do more.

Over the last few years I’ve worked with Doctors Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Paul McGann and had the pleasure of working with some amazing other actors including David Schneider, Isla Blair and the late Sam Kelly. Every project has it’s challenges. From evil, scuttling Scorpions to Mother Life herself – I never know what’s coming. I once had to play both an elderly Countess and her young Scottish maid in the same scene and in conversation! It was a relief to finally play the Doctor’s companion in the The Ninth Doctor Chronicles recently – just one character and my own accent!

Creating atmosphere

PARADISE 5: Richard Earl, Nicola Bryant, Colin Baker, Helen Goldwyn and Claire Wyatt

And it’s not just the named characters you’ll be playing on a Big Finish job. Oh no! Most of the fun comes when creating the wild tracks. Death scenes, chattering aliens, Victorian crowd scenes – there’s always some extra hubbub that needs voicing. Ask yourself how to ‘chatter’ in a made up Scorpion language and then make it sound different for fear, anger and various types of death!

You have to have a warmed up voice, an open mind and a willingness to play and make a prat of yourself.

I work hard to practice accents and play around with my voice to see what tones, energies and characteristics I can create. Audio drama is all about being versatile and creative. And I can’t wait to do more.

As soon as it’s released I’ll let you know about the Torchwood job.
